My Former Manager Put To Shame!

In front of me was a $2 Million semi-d house. I registered myself at the show house and the guard entered some code and the door opened. I pushed the door to enter the house. To my surprise…

My former group sales manager was walking in my direction!

It’s been like 10 years since I last saw him and I had to quickly search through my memory bank to get his name. He was smiling and walking towards me when I had his name recalled.

I said, “Hey Keith (name changed to protect the innocent), long time no see!”

We did the normal pleasantries and again he surprises me. He said…

“Heard you are some big-time trainer now.” I laughed and replied, “How did you know?” Apparently, he bumped into my old colleague whose GM attended my program and was teaching my materials to his guys, including my old colleague, which he then told Keith about. Not bad for word-of-mouth!

I started pulling out my name card to update him on what I’m doing. (and also to boast my success =)

When I asked him for his new business card, as he has moved on to start his own business, he said something very SHAMEFUL!!

“Yikes! Forgot to bring out any. Maybe because it’s a holiday that’s why, hahaha”.

A business person with no business card on a Sunday?  Not funny at all!

I don’t bring my business card holder on Sundays, BUT, I do slip 2 of my cards in my wallet just in case I meet someone on a Sunday. They are called my Emergency cards. With my Emergency Business Cards – I don’t need to make excuses like it’s a Sunday or I’m on holiday.

Prospecting and networking can happen anywhere, anytime. And as a business person, you must get the basics right. Your mind must always be in radar mode of hunting for business.

I was in Phuket for the Holidays last year. As I was walking on the Patong beach area, I actually bumped into a man I met several years ago in a seminar. Guess what? I had my Emergency Business Card. A few days ago, I was in The Curve for a movie – Eagle’s Eye (which by the way, is an adrenaline-rushing action-packed movie, go watch it), and I bumped into a Middle Eastern friend I met many years ago, guess what? I had my Emergency Business Card. And earlier on I was in this toilet taking a leak and the guy standing next to me was… (just kidding), the toilet incident didn’t happen…

Anyway, if you know you are going to a seminar, bring a box of business cards. If you are on a holiday or it’s a weekend, slip 2 business cards in your wallet.

Eventually, it will be habitual.

With that, to more sales with less effort.
