The pinnacle of every young adult in the civilized world: university life. Unless you are a well-graded student who is fortunate enough to get into a government university, your counselor will most probably try to sell you the idea of private institutions where the grade requirements are not as high (if at all) with the financial basis of scholarships or student loans.

Today, Sales Ninja shares tips on how to increase the sales numbers for the higher education sector and how counseling is very much a sales job.

Selective Institutions

Many counselors would inspire students to go to government-endorsed universities such as UITM or UM for their career results are very impressive. But since the majority of the student body does not achieve the minimum grade requirements, it is up to you to decide for them.

The trick is to get them to enroll in selected universities but with just as good career results after graduation. Places like SEGI College or Brickfields Asia College have impressive career progression with very impressive branding. It would entice the student’s minds too, at the very least, try to achieve more in their grades to pursue a degree with these institutions.

Diplomas 1st, Degree 2nd

In the event that a student does not even meet the minimum tier of any institution, a secondary alternative exists which is the diploma. A diploma of any kind can still be beneficial to the student especially since they do not have the qualifying grades for a degree and it would be enough for the student to pursue a career after graduation.

Many counselors would default to suggest diploma 1st regardless of their grade scores which are effective but in the short run, you lose out as the finance of a degree is higher than diplomas (which you won’t be able to see).

Going International

One of the greatest challenges when offering higher education: overseas study. It is the dream of many to study abroad but also difficult to sell on because of the higher-than-average standards required.

But for those fitting, suggesting international studies would be highly impactful especially for their career choices and progression.

Sell by Story-Telling

It’s not difficult to sell a concept for higher education. The trickiest part is HOW to sell it. Many counselors make the mistake of going straight away the degrees one should chase, what are the requirements and the costs without telling the story of university life and beyond.

Many students will latch onto a certain fear that college is “just like high school except without a uniform”.

This misconception can often lead to hesitation to take up any higher education courses which can lead them into taking cheaper courses such as STPM or A-Levels.
